Gardeners want it all—low maintenance, robust health and good looks—even if they can only provide substandard growing conditions. We would never expect people to be so perfect, but with plants we want to have our cake and eat it, too. This spring we’ll flock to the nurseries and fill our carts with the most perfect-looking specimens, expecting they will stay that perfect-looking when we plant them in a hot, sunny spot and forget to water for a week. But rather than filling yourself with false hopes for every plant that strikes your fancy this spring, consider the select few that actually stand a chance to live up to our highest expectations.
