How to Plant a Perennial
Step 1 – dig a hole for the perennial plant
When planting perennials, dig a hole as deep as the root ball and two times as wide.
Step 2 – place the perennial plant in the soil
Remove the plant from its pot and place the root ball in the hole. The top of the root ball should be at soil level.
Step 3 – fill soil around the perennial’s roots
Fill the hole until the soil line is just at the base of the plant and even with the surrounding soil surface. Gently tamp the soil around the plant to remove air pockets.
Step 4 – water, mulch and care for the perennial plant
Water the plant well and add a two-inch layer of mulch around the planting area. Continue to water regularly, whenever the top inch of soil is dry to the touch. Water as needed the first three years after planting. This allows the perennial plant to become well-established.
