Features
Black huckleberry is a deciduous shrub native to a large range of North America. It has a spreading growth habit that tends to result in colonies of plants over time. Flowers appear in late spring followed by black, glossy, edible berries in summer. Black huckleberry is a slow grower that doesn’t typically require regular pruning. If pruning is needed to remove dead branches or to maintain size or shape, do it just after the berry harvest ends. Huckleberry shrubs are the host plant for a number of moth and butterfly caterpillars.
Uses
Provides food and shelter to a wide array of birds and small mammals. The flowers support insects seeking pollen. A good choice when designing an edible landscape. Enjoy the berries just as you would blueberries; in pies, tarts, jams, and preserves or topping breakfast foods like pancakes, waffles, or cereal.
