Features
Neoregelia are a beautiful group of bromeliads especially prized for their colorful foliage. These epiphytic plants are native to Brazilian rainforests where they typically grow in trees.
Neoregelia plants produce a distinct rosette of leaves with an open center, or “cup”, that collects water and debris. Organic material decomposes in the water and provides nutrients that can be absorbed by the plant. Flowers are also produced in the cup and are interesting, but not very showy.
The plant dies once flowering is complete but usually not before it has produced some offsets around the plant base. These young plants can be removed to grow new plants.
Uses
A good choice for adding a tropical feel to a porch, balcony, or patio in the summer. Small species may be used in wall planters. Makes an easy-care, pet-safe gift plant.
