Features
Native to the eastern United States, the Carolina rose thrives in a variety of habitats, including open woods and meadows. Carolina rose produces attractive compound foliage and a great display of pink, fragrant flowers with bright yellow centers from May into June. This is a very thorny plant, so use it in areas that children and pets don’t frequent. The blooms are followed by dark red hips.
To control size, branches can be pruned in late winter or early spring, before leaf buds emerge. Grows best in moist, well-draining soil. Spreads by suckers that create a dense thicket over time.
Uses
The very prickly branches of Carolina rose make it a good choice for a barrier hedge planting. Also makes an attractive backdrop for flowering perennials in a mixed border, pollinator garden, or foundation planting.
