Features
The Chinese tea plant is a variety of Camellia sinensis and one of the main varieties grown for commercial tea production of green, white and some oolong teas. It is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to subtropical regions of Southern China but now found in cultivation throughout the world. In the wild, Chinese tea can grow up to 50’ (15m) tall, but in cultivation and home landscapes it’s typically much shorter.
Chinese tea plant has attractive glossy, evergreen leaves with serrated edges. The leaves are on a slightly smaller scale compared to other camellia species. Tea plants are easy to maintain at a manageable size through regular harvesting of the tips. A height between 3-6’ (.9-1.8m) makes harvesting easier and regular pruning also encourages fresh new growth.
White flowers with brilliant yellow centers appear from fall to early winter followed by seed capsules that may take months to mature.
Tea plants growing under ideal conditions can live a long time; perhaps fifty years or more. In regions with freezing winters, tea plants can be grown indoors in a large pot, near a bright window where the plant will receive six or more hours of light each day.
Uses
An excellent foundation, hedge, or border plant. A perfect addition to an edible garden or specimen in an Asian-themed garden design. Chinese tea camellia can be grown in a large tub or pot on a sunny patio, deck or balcony.
