Features
Almond is a deciduous nut-bearing tree native to the Middle East but now grown worldwide. Almond trees produce pale pink flowers in the spring later followed by drupes that can be harvested for their delicious seeds. Almonds are generally ready for harvest in August and September. You’ll know when the nuts are mature as the outer husk of the drupes start to dry and split. Almond drupes mature from the top of the tree first, so you’ll want to be sure to keep an eye out for the first nuts maturing up high. This species is synonymous with Prunus amygdalus.
Uses
The nutritious edible nuts are popular for snacking or using in a wide range of recipes such as salads, cakes, cookies, bread, cereal, rice, and casseroles. Mature trees are a source of shade and an excellent source of food, shelter and nesting areas for wildlife.
