Features
Red elderberry is a native deciduous shrub or small tree that grows wild in North America and Eurasia. It makes an attractive ornamental in a home landscape while also providing a food source for many insects, birds and mammals. Clusters of small white flowers appear in late spring followed by bright red berries.
Elderberries should be handled with care. All parts of the plant, except ripe, cooked berries and flowers, are toxic. Consuming raw berries or any leaves, stems, or roots can cause nausea and other symptoms. Even the tiny stems attached to the berries need to be removed. You should never eat raw elderberries and always process and cook them before use.
Uses
Dense foliage makes a great informal hedge row or privacy screen. A good choice for a native garden or edible landscape. Elderberries can be cooked to use for jams, jellies, syrups, and beverages.
