Features
Guzmania is a popular genus of bromeliads with many beautiful species. These tropical epiphytes are native to warm regions of Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Florida where they can be found clinging to trees or large rocks.
The plant forms a distinct rosette of leaves with an open center, or “cup”, that collects water and debris. Organic material decomposes in the water and provides nutrients that can be absorbed by the plant.
A Guzmania plant dies once flowering is complete but usually not before it has produced some offsets around the plant base. These young plants can be removed when they are around 6” (15cm) in size to grow new plants.
Uses
Adds an exotic touch to home décor, an office, or outdoor spaces in summer. Small species may be used in wall planters. Makes an easy-care gift plant.
