Features
Mountain laurel is a dense broadleaf evergreen shrub native to eastern regions of North America where it is often found growing on the fringe of wooded areas or waterways. It produces attractive deep green, lance-shaped leaves. Mountain laurel is a spectacular sight when the flower clusters are in full bloom from late spring to mid-summer. The flower buds are a different shade than the open blooms creating a striking contrast of colors.
This is a slow grower that won’t quickly take over a space. Caution should be used if you have pets or small children as all parts of this plant contain the toxins grayanotoxin and arbutin. Both are poisonous to humans and most animals if ingested.
Many cultivars are available with different growth habits and flower colors.
Uses
Evergreen foliage adds color to the winter landscape. Use in partially shaded locations along a fence or wall, in a border, woodland garden, or used in native plantings.
