Features
Tree philodendron is a Brazilian native plant that produces big, deeply-cut leaves that can instantly add an exotic, tropical feel to a bright room or shady outdoor space. This is an easy-to-grow and durable plant that doesn’t require much maintenance, other than removing the occasional dead leaf or stem. Grow with other tropicals for a lush, jungle effect.
In 2018 the tree philodendron was botanically reclassified as Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum. The previous botanical names, Philodendron bipinnatifidum and Philodendron selloum remain familiar synonyms of this most recent reclassification.
Caution: Thaumatophyllum (or Philodendron) plants contain a compound called calcium oxalate that can be toxic to cats, dogs, and people. Calcium oxalate crystals irritate the mouth and stomach if ingested, leading to symptoms such as swelling, pain, and digestive problems.
Uses
A very popular potted houseplant. Excellent for planting along fences and walls outdoors. A classic favorite for landscape focal points. Grow in the landscape in frost-free climates. Potted plants may be displayed outdoors in warmer weather in areas with cold winters.
