Features
Variegated silverthorn is a colorful version of the silverthorn shrub, with glossy dark green leaves blotched with golden yellow down the center of each leaf. This is a broadleaf evergreen, native to Japan. In addition to providing year-round color, variegated silverthorn produces small white trumpet-shaped flowers in autumn. The blooms aren’t very showy, but their intense fragrance is captivating. Flowers are followed by small brown berries that are a welcome treat for birds. As the common name implies, silverthorn produces sturdy thorns, up to 2-3 inches (5-8 cm) in length, as the shrub matures.
Also known by a number of varietal names, including Elaeagnus pungens ‘Maculata Aurea’, Elaeagnus pungens ‘Aureovariegata’, and Elaeagnus pungens ‘Aureomaculata’ as well as the common names Maculata Thorny Eleagnus and Maculata Thorny Silverberry.
